Gemstones are a type of material commonly seen in CG painting. This tutorial combines some methods learned from online study with personal experimentation to summarize and explain how to draw gemstones.

The process can be divided into three parts: shaping, texuring, and coloring.

Shaping

The shapes of gemstones can be classified as artificially cut shapes and natural crystal shapes.

Artificially cut shapes

Determine the basic shapes

Determine the basic shapes, e.g. with polygon tool:

Thake diamond as an example. You can use the polygon tool and the selection tool to quickly sculpt its shapes.

Natural crystal shapes

For some irregular shapes, you can also use the pen tool or selection tool.

Triangular shapes can be obtained by this method:

Select polygon tool, then click on blank area of canvas, then this window would pop up.
