At the Tōwa roadside station...
"Shunkatō..."?
Hey, how do you read this thing?
Whuh?
Since there's no "fall" of the four seasons, that's read "aki nai."
The next part means "two masu," as in squares on a grid, so it's read "masumasu."
"Five gō" or 902ml, is half of 1 shō, so it's read "hanjō."
So all together, you read it as "Akinai masumasu hanjō," or "Business is booming."
Like anyone could read that...
This isn't meant to be read literally, and the kanji puns are explained below, but just for clarity, the kanji on the sign are "春夏冬二升五合" or "spring-summer-winter, two masu, five gō." (A masu is a square or cell on a grid. The kanji 升 can also be read as shō, an old measure of liquid, about 1.8 liters. 1 gō is .1 shō, or 180.4 ml.)

  • がんばれ小傘さん 3859

    自分の日頃の行いを小傘さんに投影して描いてみようという日記漫画です。

    似たようなものに『一斗二升五合』というものもあります。
    これは、一斗は五升の倍なので「ごしょうばい」、あわせて「御商売益々繁盛」と読みます。
    なかなか頭を使います。

    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 3859

There are similar ones with "一斗二升五合" on them instead. For this one, 一斗 is 1 to [tn]18 liters[/i], which is double 5 shō, or "go-shō bai," so all together, it's "Goshōbai masumasu hanjō," or "Business is booming" again. You have to use your head quite a bit.
