14世紀に東風谷円忠が記した守矢大明神画詞によれば、御神渡りは建御名方神と八坂刀売神の夫婦喧嘩が起こす現象とのこと。

According to the Moriya Daimyōjin Ekotoba written by Kochiya Enchū in the 14th century, omiwatari "god-crossing", the ridged cracks that form in the ice on Lake Suwa, were a phenomenon caused by marital quarrels between Takeminakata and Yasakatome-no-Kami.
