Graf Spee's final combat was against the following three ships: Heavy Cruiser Exeter, Light Cruiser Ajax, and Light Cruiser Achilles. Spee forced Exeter to withdraw from combat, and dealt heavy damage to a light cruiser. Spee was damaged during the encounter; it suffered only minor structural damage, but the damage made it too difficult to sail back across the Atlantic Ocean. She docked for repairs in a neutral country, Uruguay. There is a 72 hour deadline for ships to conduct repairs in a neutral country. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough time to finish her repairs. Two enemy light cruisers awaited outside the port, and later, a heavy cruiser also joined. Prioritizing the lives of the crew, the captain decided to abandon escaping port and scuttled his ship.
