September 29th. kuru(9)-fu(2)-ku(9) for "coming fortune", so it's maneki-neko day. Once upon a time cats were apparently brought aboard ships as protective spirits. They would take care of the mice--natural enemies of the sailors' rations--and it was believed they could predict the weather and discern directions. And of course, they were mascots, too.
