innertube
Other names: 浮き輪, うきわ, 浮輪, 游泳圈
A type of recreational swim ring used to float in the water, especially by young children and people who cannot swim. So called because it resembles (and in earlier times, usually was) the inner tube of a car tire.
They are filled with air and worn around the torso or sat on while floating on the water. They are often constructed of transparent material, ostensibly for better visibility of the wearer.
Not to be confused with a lifebuoy, which is used to rescue people who are drowning and is usually orange or red-and-white in color.
