It is only regrettable that many of those perished on the battlefield or in the communist prisons.

I took the initiative to change the hostile relations between our nations in a situation that many today will struggle to understand.

One of such documents, adressed to Ukrainians on May 3, 1945, read:

"We will not decide today who was to blame for our standing in hostile camps. There were, undoubtedly, past mistakes [...]. In the face of a mutually hated enemy, we realize that our path must be common, [...] mutual struggle destroys us and strengthens our enemy. [...] We call on you to focus and unite your forces with ours in a common fight against the eternal, the common enemy of nations - Russia, and the enemy of national thought - communism. [...] So we call on you and wait!
