明治13年(1880)、イギリス東洋艦隊旗艦のアイアンデューク号が、サハリン島アニバ湾に向かう途中、北海道奥尻島青苗岬で座礁しました。この時、海軍少尉としてアイアンデュークに乗艦していた有栖川宮威仁親王が島民を指揮して救助活動を行いました。

In 1880, the Iron Duke, flagship of the British Eastern Fleet, ran aground at Aonae Cape on Okushiri Island, Hokkaido, en route to Aniva Bay on Sakhalin Island. At the time, Prince Arisugawa Takehito, who was a naval ensign aboard the Iron Duke, led the islanders in a rescue operation.
