慶応3年12月7日(１８６８年１月１日)、兵庫開港を祝うために集まった英仏米の艦隊です。兵庫港は１８６３年からの開港が予定されていましたが、孝明天皇が京都に近い兵庫の開港に断固反対していたため、５年間延長してこの日の開港となりました。

絵は右から、英国東洋艦隊旗艦ロドニー(蒸気戦列艦)、オーシャン(装甲艦)、奥が米国艦隊です。ロドニーが砲門を開いていたかどうかは分かりませんが、イギリスならこのくらいの恫喝はするだろうと各艦戦闘体制で描きました。

This is a fleet of British, French and American ships that gathered to celebrate the opening of Hyogo Port on January 1, 1868. Hyogo Port was scheduled to open in 1863, but because Emperor Komei was firmly opposed to opening Hyogo due to its proximity to Kyoto, the opening was postponed for five years and finally opened on this day.

From the right, the painting shows the British Eastern Fleet flagship Rodney (steam ship of the line), Ocean (ironclad ship), and in the background the US fleet. We do not know if Rodney had its guns open, but I painted each ship in combat mode, thinking that this would be the kind of intimidation that Britain would make.
