シャクニとは、クル族の王であるドリタラーシュトラの妻、ガーンダーリーの弟にあたる人物―――つまりはドゥリーヨダナの叔父である。
ドゥリーヨダナと仲が良く、彼を王位につけるべく五王子に対して様々な悪事を行い、また、大戦争でも共に戦った。
シャクニは特に天才的な賭博の才能を持っていたとされ、五王子たちが国を追放される原因となった骰子賭博の最大の立役者として知られるが、それがどの程度
「まともな」賭博だったのかは―――

Śakuni was the younger brother of Gāndhārī, who was the consort of King Dhr̥tarāṣṭra of the Kuru kingdom, making him Duryodhana's uncle. He was always friendly with Duryodhana, and he committed various misdeeds against the Five Princes in an effort to put his nephew on the throne. He also fought on his nephew's side in the great war. Śakuni was said to be a gambling prodigy and is best known as the central figure in setting up the dice game that led to the exile of the Five Princes. However, it's unknown how "honest" this gambling game was...
