A long, long time ago, there were lots of cherry blossom trees on this mountain.

The oni that lived there was called the Sakuraoni, and was feared by the villagers at the foot of the mountain.

The Sakuraoni was hard to deal with, but he loved cherry blossoming viewing.

During the cherry blossom season, he was in good spirits. He invited the villages and held feasts.

One day, the villagers poisoned the sake.

The Sakuraoni died.

Afterwards, the numerous cherry blossom trees all withered.

From the oni's corpse, a bud sprouted, and grew into a huge cherry blossom tree.

It is said that the petals of the cherry blossoms are red like blood due to the grudge of the Sakuraoni.

Eh... How scary.

Eh... How scary.

No matter how many times I see it, I don't like that story.

This shrine is to appease the Sakuraoni.

Since today it's in full bloom, I'm offering sake.
