The definition of "fox"

In the strictest sense, it simply refers to the genus Vulpes.

In a broader sense, there is no strict definition, instead it's a general term that refers to several genera of the Caninae subfamily

As it consists of multiple unrelated genera, it is a polyphyletic group.

Unusually for canines, they do not live in groups, but in small family units.

Although they are nocturnal and very cautious, they are intelligent and inquisitive animals.

Therefore, once they judge that it is okay, they start to take bold action.

*Do not feed wild animals

By the way, tanuki are also included in the red fox clade
