Media asset #1
5/8 is Shoplifting Prevention Day! A day established based on the wordplay behind the word "business" which itself can mean "to arrest a criminal." The wordplay for "business" (御用/goyou) being: go = 5 and you = 8. In period dramas of the Edo era, officials under shogunate order often announce their visits by saying "We're here on official business". If things turn violent or the suspect tries to run, they might shout "This is official business! This is official business!" to any passersby and witnesses while apprehending or pursuing the criminal. This use has led to the word goyou also becoming a verb that means "to arrest".
Understand, Marisa?
Stealing is against the law!
Crossroads killing is a crime too.
That's not important right now!
A trope with Japanese policemen in media is that they often serve criminals katsudon during interrogation to remind them of a traditional home meal, and then ask the question: "Did you ever think about how your mother would feel about this?" as they eat to appeal to their conscience, so that they might confess. This isn't actually done in real life as it would be a confession caused by inducement.
