Mushrooms at Marisa's feet and stars in her hand represent her status as the magician of the Forest of Magic.
Flowing time separates the two. Although they befriended each other in youth, when Marisa becomes a true magician and attains immortality Reimu will remain human, and time will ultimately separate them.
