Then, what does "beat the bushes" mean!? Why must it be bushes!? What does "digging out the roots and leaves" mean!? I get about the "digging out the roots" but what's with the "leaves"!? The original phrase is 根掘り葉掘り (nehori hahori) which means asking even about the tiniest details. The literal translation is "digging out the roots and the leaves". Ghiaccio used this phrase in GW episode 18 / Vento Aureo chapter 68.

Certainly, literally it would make no sense now... However, the expression "beat the bushes" came from hunters back then. That is true... However, the "digging out leaves (hahori)" part was just added to emphasize the "digging out the roots (nehori)" and adjust the rhythm of the idiom.

Hunters used to make use of sticks to beat bushes so that their prey would come out so that they could shoot or net them. Considering the origin of the phrase, it makes sense, don't you think? Even if it's totally understandable if you just say it as "digging out the roots (nehori)", it doesn't sound persuasive enough, does it?
