This is a reference to Naval Battle of Jiangyin (1937.8.13 - 1937.9.25) during Sino-Japanese War.
In this battle, Chinese 1st and 2nd fleets were pitted against Japanese task force led by Kaga, in desperate attempt to stop Japanese occupation of Yangtze River. The fight lasted a month, and ended with Chinese fleet being either destroyed or scuttled as blockade. The land based batteries fought till the downfall on December.
China lost all her naval force after this, but did successfully thwarted the Japanese attempt of occupying her capital Nanking via Yangtze River. However, Nanking eventually fell to Japanese land force on Dec.13, and a massacre soon follows.
Ning Hai, Ping Hai, and Yat-sen were all part of the sunken Chinese fleet. They were later salvaged by Japanese and renamed to Ioshima, Yasoshima, and Atada. The previous two served as transport ship and sunk by US force later in the war, while Yat-sen was used as a training ship and survived the war. Chinese artist y.ssanoha had a mini series on this event.
