The passing rain's gone / But its dim dew still remains / On the yew plum's leaves / A mist is starting to rise / On this fair autumnal eve
The 89th poem of the "Hyakunin Isshu", by Jakuren-hōshi.
The Three Evening Waka are recorded in the "Shin Kokin Wakashu". Saigyō-hōshi and Fujiwara no Teika wrote similar poems as well.
Besides this poem, Jakuren-houshi is also known for the "Three Evening Waka" that all end with the words "autumnal eve".
He used the name Jakuren-houshi between the late Heian period and the early Kamakura period.
His real name was Fujiwara no Sadanaga. He was adopted by the poet Shunzei...
—You really do know a lot about this, don't you?
Even if I tried to isolate myself from the world
I still got to watch the rise and fall of my clan with my own eyes.
Though he was adopted by Shunzei, after the births of Shunzei's sons Nariie and Teika he left home at 30 years old and became a monk, specializing in tanka poetry. After all, he and Teika, who compiled the Hyakunin Isshu, were brothers from different mothers.
[Modern Japanese translation]
An empty body / Still does deeply feel / The world's longing and sorrow / As the snipes fly past the brook / On this long autumnal eve
Saigyō-hōshi
As I view the scene / The flowers, the reddened leaves / Nowhere to be seen / Round the humble rush-thatched house / This seaside autumnal eve
Fujiwara no Teika
It's not some color / That again brings me into / A desolate mood / Yew pines cover the mountain / This lonely autumnal eve
Saigyō-hōshi
