Iridium ... Atomic number 77. A rare metal not found near the surface of the Earth. The unusually high abundance of iridium found in the clay layer where the dinosaur era ended, gave rise to the hypothesis that the impact of a meteorite caused the extinction of dinosaurs and many other species. It is said that most iridium have descended below the crust when the planet was young and still molten following a large mantle convection, however.
