While on her way to Japan, U-511 was mistaken for an enemy and was investigated by Etorofu. July 29, 1943: Convoy HI-03 bound for Singapore stumbles onto U-511; tanker Omurosan Maru fires at the submarine until the mistake is cleared up. The skipper of Etorofu inspects the submarine then personally apologizes.
