Solomon Islands skink

Origin: Solomon Islands Full length: 70 to 80 cm Diet: Vegetables, fruits, pothos Average starting cost of keeping, including equipment: ~¥150,000

The largest species of skink. The largest species of skink.

This species has several unique characteristics.

First of all, as its Japanese name suggests, it skillfully wraps its tail around branches and other objects when climbing trees. Its japanese name, omaki tokage (tokage being "lizard", sounds very similar to makitsukeru ("to wrap around").

Also although they are completely herbivorous, they are nocturnal. Another feature not seen in other reptiles is the fact that they do not require ultraviolet light, something that keepers will appreciate.

Furthermore, although they are ovoviviparous* they raise their young, making them a very unique species.

Arboreal lizards have sharp claws, but this species' are particularly strong and can be quite painful even if the lizard doesn't mean any harm.

Although they move slowly and are not aggressive, their jaws are strong and their teeth are sharp, so a bite can be painful.

It's best to be careful when touching it. By the way, their favourite food is pothos (a plant of the tuber family).

* A reproductive method in which eggs are hatched inside the womb and the hatched young are then given birth.

大型ならサンエステバン、小型ならオリーブダシアが好きですが、１番はやはりアブロニアのタエニアータ。例によって描いてませんけど。

I like San Esteban for the large ones and Dasia olivacea for the small ones, but my favorite is still Abronia taeniata. As usual, I haven't drawn it yet.
