Kaga class first ship
3rd ship of the Eight-Eight Fleet plan. Originally built as the Battleship Kaga, but after various twist of fate (Washington Naval Treatry, destruction of Amagi because of Kanto Great Earthquake) she's remodelled into an aircraft carrier in 1928.
But even though her specification is higher than Nagato, her length is shorter than Akagi in order to reduce attack surface. Her maximum speed of 28 knots is also too slow to be an aircraft carrier.
Moreover, Kaga had other problems surrounding her, such as the triple decker flight deck and the funnel design earned her nickname of "Seabird Yakitori Grilling Machine"To solve all those problems, a major remodelling is started in 1933. After this remodelling is finished in 1935, Kaga is equipped with longer runway and she also adopts Akagi's funnel design.
Her sections are enlarged. Airplane and fuel capacity are also added, increasing her operational distance. The remodelling made Kaga a top class aircraft carrier of her time.During the Attack on Pearl Harbour, she sustained the highest number of casualties and getting stranded. When the war escalates in the first Shanghai Incident, she participated with Houshou as part of the third fleet. This is the first recorded history of aircraft carrier participation in battle.Pearl Harbour
After that, Kaga and Akagi who formed the First Carrier Division are grouped together with the Second and Fifth Carrier Division into the First Carrier Fleet and executed the attack on Pearl Harbour (Hawaii).Battle of Midway
Finally in 1942, the fateful Battle of Midway. Admiral Nagumo's fleet allowed enemy fleet to approach and send them aerial attack. On 07:22 Japanese standard time, attack on Kaga begin.Enemy aircrafts focused their attack on Kaga and four bomb hit are recorded and caused explosions which resulted in uncontrollable fire.
It's said that Kaga sustained the highest number of casualties.
