Multiple explanations/etymologies exist; most commonly: 1. Out of spite: Autumn eggplants are delicious; it would be a waste to let the wife have it — the wife being accorded lower status within the family in the feudal era. 2. Out of concern: Autumn eggplants are especially cooling food and are bad for the wife's health; and/or based on superstition that autumn eggplants have few seeds, and thus will reduce the wife's fertility.
