Admiral, I believe you're aware of this, but when you modernize a ship without improving her abilities, it won't contribute to your daily quest.
One of KanColle's recurring daily quests is "艦の「近代化改修」を実施せよ! (Make modernizations [composition] on your ships!)".
If you succeed twice in the modernization in a day, you will clear the quest. Every time you succeed on the quest, you get one bucket of high-speed repair material.
Note that the modernization without improving ship's abilities is not counted as a success.
