Remembrance Day
May 18th is a Remembrance Day of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people. In 1944, the Soviets brutally deported at least 191000 Crimean Tatars from their ancestral homeland.
Today, the history repeats itself in many ways.
I’m not a Crimean Tatar, but I’ve made my OC Shefiká in hopes to spread awareness about this small ethnic group. Here I drew her with her grandmother, who was lucky enough to survive the 1944 deportation. But today, in 2026, they still can’t live in Crimea due to the russian occupation and persecution of the ethnic population there.
Shefiká and her grandmother are, obviously, not real. But I made them after stories of the real Crimean Tatars. I hope this helps spread awareness, even if a little bit.
